Volume 2 Tackling Institutional Racism
CCETSW logo

Introduction

Teaching social care workers to tackle the causes of institutional racism is difficult using traditional training methods. Using the power of interactive multimedia this CD provides you with a virtual environment in which to explore the complex issues involved in helping just one Black service user achieve equality of access to an appropriate social care service.

Using ten virtual case studies the program encourages you to identify, critically analyse and counter the processes of institutional racism present in a virtual social care agency. Adopting this approach enables you to graphically link the abstract concepts of this phenomenon with the organisational processes that can result in racial exclusion for the Black communities.

You are encouraged to critically reflect upon the teaching offered by this resource. The design enables you to use the experiences and knowledge gained to examine your personal and your organisations ability to tackle the causes of social exclusion caused by the processes of institutional racism. The Simulation section of the program tests your ability to identify, analyse and counter the processes of institutional racism.

In this program you play the part of the Gatekeeper who must unlock the Virtual Social Care Agencies ability to provide equality of access to appropriate social care services to the Black communities.

How does the Simulation section work ?

When you begin the simulation section of the program you will find yourself in a room facing a door with 10 locks. Each lock represents a process of institutional racism present in the Virtual Social Care Agency.

Your task as the Gatekeeper is to open each of the 10 locks to allow the social care agency to provide equality of access to appropriate social care services for the Black communities.

Virtual Community
To gain access to the 10 passwords you must wander around the Virtual community and visit each of the social care services offices where processes of institutional racism exist.

Once in an office you are allowed to approach the workers. They will provide you information about their part of the organisation.

Your objective will be to accomplish the tasks set for you to overcome the processes of institutional racism and collect the password by successfully completing a virtual case study.

Interpreting Section
Interpreting Managers Scene

In all there are 10 virtual case studies you must complete. This means that there is over one and a quarter hours worth of interactive video on this CD.
In this section you are provided with feedback about your actions and in-actions during these exercises.

You must interact with the worker rather than passively absorb knowledge. The case studies are based upon recent evidence based research.

To complete the program successfully you must return to the room from which you began your quest and enter the passwords into the 10 locks.
Once you successfully unlock the door you will have helped the Virtual Social Care Agency provide equality of access to appropriate social care services for its Black communities.

The aim of the program is to help you identify, analyse and counter the processes of social exclusion. You are encouraged to reflect upon this learning and apply it to the organisation in which you work.
